Mastering the Art of...

For those of you have read the title and are thinking I about to follow it up with "French Cooking," you are deeply mistaken and clearly don't know me at all. It would be great if I could master the art of any cooking at all- especially, French cooking. (Actually, I'd prefer Tex-Mex but I don't think Julia wrote a book on that!)But alas, I can only cook one dish, one side, chocolate chip cookies, and a wonderful cheese dip with bacon on the top! So no, Julia Childs and the other Julie from NY (for those that have seen the movie) would not be very proud of me. And I am pretty sure I won't be having any food critics down to my basement mini-kitchen anytime soon! But I will tell you what I have recently mastered the art of...

EATING AT HOME!

For those of you who don't know me, you are probably thinking to yourselves "Whoopty-Doo!" For those of you who do know me, you can go ahead and pick your jaws up off the floor. It is true, I, Caroline, have officially mastered the art of eating at home. You would be shocked how many meals I eat here. I have even found that is possible to go an entire day without spending any money on food! Shocker, I know!

**Note: I still have not found it is possible to go a whole day without spending money on diet coke! Oh, well..maybe one day!

For those of you who are wondering how I did it, or any of you who are chronic eat-outers, I would like to share with you some things that I have learned. So here it is...

Ten Tips to Mastering the Art of Eating at Home:

10. Always have a jar of peanut butter ready! I am now sooo organic and go for the all natural one. You have to stir up the oils in there but it is well worth the work!

9. When tired of the boring sandwich, get yo-self some tortillas to make a wrap!

8. Always have a lil something sweet on hand for dessert! (I recommend the Skinny Cows!!)

7. Condiments are a must! Preferably honey mustard, hummus, and guac! (Those are condiments right?)

6. If you cannot cook, the microwave will become your new best friend! I have now named mine Molly Micro- we have great chats each evening around dinner time!

5. Baked lays go with anything!

4. Cereal for dinner is sensational and lower calorie than most dinners! For a fancy cereal treat- go ahead, get crazy, and combine 2 or 3 kinds!

3. It is possible to create a sandwich pretty close to what you like at your fave place! (Now all I need is one of those grills from PD's and I am set!)

2. Unfortunately, frozen dinners never taste as good as the picture on the box tells you it will. But you get over that pretty fast!

1. Eating at home causes you to spend less cash money and consume less calories! Um, yes please!

So there you have it!

Alright, off to heat up my baked ziti in a box...

... and then finish up my list of restaurants I can't wait to eat at on my visit home to Dallas in October!

Ok, so maybe I haven't totally mastered it :)

Bon Appetit!!

Just Call Me Dr. Doolittle

There are those who say that the entire populous can be divided simply into two kinds of people- dog people and cat people. But whoever those are seemed to have left out the rest of us- those who don't like animals at all.

I am definitely one of the latter. I realize this may come as a surprise to those who don't really know me, that it may offend some of you, may make some of you sad, and possibly, may make some of you stop reading this blog. But it is true, I do not like animals. I have virtually no affection for or affinity towards God's furry or feathery creatures.

I would like to blame this, what might seem to some, as a character flaw on Camp El Har. This day camp forces you to ride horses in a circle around a small arena. It always seemed that the one in front of me always needed to stop for a "restroom break" and I luckily, had a front row seat! Pretty sure I will be happy if I never get on a horse again!

My lack of heart for animals was revealed to me in 6th grade. One of my friends gave me what I am sure she thought was going to be the greatest of gifts- a hamster! Well, at least I hope she thought it was great because after I affectionately named it after my teacher and cleaned out Dori's cage once, I gave her back! Cleaning out a cage full of hamster poop- not my idea of a good time!

The next year, our family got our first and favorite dog! She was a mutt that my mom picked up for free at John's soccer game. Cinnamon was precious, sweet, and docile. Unfortunately, her sweet, docile personality was due to the fact that she was actually very sick. She died a few weeks later. We all hold Cinnamon in high esteem these days; her memory is fond in our minds and in our hearts- probably, sadly, because she was not around long enough for us to get sick of her.

My other experience with dogs is as follows- there was Hamilton, our beagle who chewed through the fence and ran away. Despite an all out search, or a drive to the donut store with their eyes closed, Dad and John never found him. He has, however, provided Dad and I with endless sermon/teaching illustrations about sin, the law, and the life that is found within God's boundaries. In the end, though his barking was more than obnoxious, he was good for something.

Then there was Bo, the black lab that I just HAD to have. Let's just say that after a while, I ceased to give Bo the attention he was due. Yeah, and that might be an understatement! We gave Bo away, those people gave him back. So we gave him away again, and then quickly changed our numbers and moved away. I am kidding- well, sort of.

Then there was Ernie. The dog my friend Mindy's now husband Josh gave her for her birthday! I believe Ernie has a keen sense that I was not his biggest fan, and was determined to win me over. Therefore, he was always jumping up on my bed...when he was wet... with fleas! After he continually barked all night, pooped all over the house, and ran away on more than one occasion, Mindy took him back to the SPCA. I was not opposed. Gosh, am I heartless? Do not answer that!

Along with a lack of affection, I also have a great fear of animals! My lack of heart for them coexists alongside an utter inability to know what to do when they are around. I lack that intuition of what to do and worse what they are able to do with me.

This summer when I was out at the Hawkins ranch for a few days by myself, I was deathly afraid of the cows out in the pasture. They would come up to the fence right around the pool and just stare at me. As I would watch them stealthily approach the fence, a deep fear rose within me. I determined that I absolutely could not make eye contact, in case they saw something in my eyes that would make them want to charge me! I could just picture myself getting attacked by the cow and and left all alone in the wilds of Texas!

Ok, so why am I writing this post today? Because this morning on my walk around the neighborhood, I had a near death run in with some St. Louis wildlife. It appears that up here in Missouri they do not separate the wildlife preserves from the city. Strange. And yet another reason for me to believe that we not only do things bigger, but also better in Texas!

So, this morning I was casually- I mean powerfully- walking along when what do I come across but some deer. It appeared to be a dad, a mom, and a baby- to use technical animal terms. I don't have much experience with deer, but remember from Bambi that deer don't particularly like people. What was I to do? Should I turn back or forge courageously ahead? Filled with courage, I went ahead and I opted again for the no eye contact method. I figured it seemed to work alright with the cows, as well as in elevators and on crowded streets when you don't wan't people to talk to you. So, with great bravery, I proceeded to stare intensely at the sidewalk and stroll on by. It worked and I figured I was in the clear.

That is until my way home. I rounded the last corner only to be met by a sight I had never seen before- a whole pack of what I could only assume to be wild turkeys! I was literally paralyzed with fear, and began having those "when you are awake nightmares" of being viciously attacked by the rather gross birds and being pecked to death. I mean, they probably do have it out for me, I have been eating their friends on my sandwiches pretty much daily for as long as I can remember. I decided to attempt to do that which was anything but natural and stay calm, stare at the sidewalk, and again casually stroll by. Thankfully, it worked. But I did however pick up the speed a bit when I heard a strange sound and swear I saw that gross daddy turkey coming towards me from the corner of my eye.

For those of you who are still reading and those of you who care, I am very thankful that I escaped the ravages of the wilds here in STL and am now sitting comfortably it the animal free student center her at school. What I did not escape however, was the request of one of my new friends to take care of his hamster for 3 days while he and his wife do some work in their house! Looks like I am a people pleaser over and above and animal hater! And I am going to go ahead and say that's a good thing.

Hope y'all have a great day! Stay out of the way of animals, but if you do happen to come across one of those furry and feathery beasts- just keep your eyes on the ground! Works like a charm!

Bad Dreams...

This will be a rather short post, but just wanted to ask for your thoughts, your insights, and for any of you counselors or dream interpreters out there- your professional opinions:

What does it mean when my bad dreams still involve my high school cheerleading days?

This morning, I woke up with my heart still racing from this bad dream, or could we call it a nightmare. I was running around like crazy, emptying every drawer, calling friends for help because I had to cheer at that very moment, and my red bloomers were no where to be found. And there was no way I was going to where the blue ones. They weren't what the rest of the squad was wearing and so didn't go with the white uniform.

Oh, and to make things worse, tryouts were the next day and my hurkies totally stunk!

Clearly a nightmare...

Unfortunately, a nightmare applying to events from 10 years ago!

So yeah, I'm pretty sure I need some help!

No Fear...Yeah Right

I have mentioned before that as a kid- one who was extremely girly and not tomboyish at all- my wardrobe consisted of mostly Umbros and tshirts, my favorite of which were the brand NO FEAR. They said things like, "A Champion is one who gets up even when they can't...NO FEAR!" or "He who dies with the most toys still dies...NO FEAR."

NO FEAR tackles all sorts of scary subjects...falling, failure, crying, sports, etc. But for some reason they failed to leave off the scariest subject of all...

THE DENTIST

Seriously, there is not much in this world I am afraid of more than the dentist. And honestly, I would rather go anywhere or do anything than have to sit in that chair and have them prod metal tools and grind gritty toothpaste all over my mouth.

You might think I am a chicken, a wimp, or flat out ridiculous. You may be judging me, which you know as a reader you are not supposed to do while reading this blog. But you'd be deathly afraid of the dentist too if...

1. Your anesthesia ran out during a minor gum surgery when you were 8! (I could stick a nickel between my two front teeth back then, so let's just say my mouth needed a little fixin!)

2. A dental hygienist made you cry when you were 21, and when your mom called to report it later that day, that same dental hygienist had already been fired. Looks like I was the last victim in her chair before she was terminated.

3. When you are 25 and working in ministry, your childhood dentist makes you pay $1000 of your hard-earned money on a mouth guard that you don't need to fix a jaw problem that you don't have. When in reality, all you needed was a little Advil because you had temporarily injured it on a frozen peanut m&m. (Go ahead and judge here, it's legit!)

So you see, my fear is justified and thus, I had not been to the dentist in 2 years! And had no intention of going back either, no intention of conquering that fear. That is until my sweet, subtle mother kept reminding me how desperately I needed to get my teeth cleaned so they wouldn't just fall out while I was in seminary! (The chances are not good of finding a cute boy up there without any teeth!)

So yesterday, I decided to conquer my fears and after a couple of shots of tequila (just kidding), after a couple of diet cokes, I ventured up to see my friend Lee Bridgeman, who swore he could change my thoughts of dentists all together. And I would just like to give a shout out, a congrats, and a thanks to Lee and all the folks at Bridgeman Dental because guess what...THEY DID!

When talking to my sweet, subtle mother on the phone on the way home I actually described my dentist visit as a pleasant experience! Words I have never before uttered..

Maybe it was because my friend Michelle (Lee's wife) greeted me when I walked in...

Maybe it was because my hygienist actually asked frequently if she was hurting me instead of just jamming those stupid metal tools deeper and deeper into my un-flossed gums!!

Maybe it was because of all the compliments she gave me saying my teeth looked great for not having gone to the dentist in 2 years! (I'm an easy sell. Flattery typically works!)

Maybe it was because the gritty toothpaste actually smelled and tasted like a Miami Vice (you know, Pina Colada and Strawberry Daiquiri mix). If I closed my eyes, I could almost swear I was laying out on the beaches of Cancun rather than in the dentist chair.

Maybe it was because after two years of no dentist, I still had NO CAVITIES! What what!

Whatever it was...my fear is gone. Lee, you are a miracle worker and have made a believer out of me. I will now and forever more, call you my dentist. For any of you that are crippled by a phobia of your local dentist, give Lee and his crew a call. Many, many thanks, Lee!

All smiles...and a clean one at that-

Junk in the Trunk...

For those of you who are worried about the title, have no fear! This is not about J-Lo.

It is not a gross and shameful post. Well, not gross and shameful in the way you might think. So, yeah, have no fear!

One of the things I have heard over and over again in my time at PCPC is that is not good in any way to have parts of your life that are secret, hidden so that no one can see them. In fact it is dangerous to have junk in your life that no one really knows about and that you can effectively keep hidden from everyone!

I experienced that this was overwhelmingly true today as I was cleaning out the trunk of my car! It was unbelievable...so, so, SO much junk that I have effectively kept hidden, even from myself over the past few years!

I used to have an SUV, so anyone who got in my car could definitely see all the Junk in the Trunk, and believe me they did! Girls, remember how horrible it was!? I was always nervous I had lost one of my youth kids back there and just had no idea! My fear was assuaged however when none of their faces ever appeared on a milk carton. As long as that wasn't the case, I figured I was pretty safe!

The beauty of my Passat that I have driven these past few years has been the trunk...it is completely secret. So I can store as much crap back there as I want, and still pull off the appearance of clean car!** Please excuse the language, but, as you will soon see, it really fits!

Today I officially began my "Pre-Move-to-STL-to-do-list" and figured I would tackle "Clean out Car" first. Let me just tell you I was in no way prepared for what I would find.

Brace yourself, take a look at just a small sample of what I found, and, as I seem to say a lot on this blog...please don't judge me!

The trunk before the big clean out:

Oh you know... just addressed and stamped support letters I never sent for a mission trip I never went on. How long will it take me to salvage all those stamps??

Just a few photos of my friends from China... (Ingrid, the girl on the bottom left is my fave and we are still friends!)

All the athletic gear that I need being the incredible athlete that I am!!

Seeing as my last camping trip was in 8th grade, I figured I might need to be prepared for my next one which could obviously come spur of the moment. The rubber snake is a must have- obviously!

A boom-box. In case you were in fact beginning to judge me for not cleaning out my trunk since 1997, the CD inside does say Christmas 2007, so I am vindicated! Stop judging!

Clearly, you never know when you might need to throw a spontaneous Easter Egg Hunt! Thank goodness I was prepared!

Gotta keep your good reading handy at all times. Seriously, what is better than an US Weekly with Shawn and Nastia on the front?!?!

Just in case you were wondering about the spirituality in my trunk, don't worry there was a small little library in there as well- complete with the Westminster Shorter Catechism! Aren't I such a good little Presbyterian?

This is my sweet friend Grace, when she happened to stop by she had absolutely no idea what she was getting herself into! Here she is holding one of several trash bags complete with junk from the trunk. Just use your imagination, as much of what you saw on this blog post did not end up in there!!

My favorite thing Grace said this afternoon was "All of that came out of THAT trunk? You should definitely be getting better gas milage now!"

I thanked Grace for her insight and for her help my sending her home with a few party favors from the trunk!

Finally finished! Now i just wonder how my friends at the office are going to feel when I bring all my junk from the trunk that actually belongs to the church back up to them.

Hmm... pretty sure no one is up there at midnight on a Saturday... might just have to sneak up there now!

Adios....

something's not quite right...

This afternoon I was at the mall...

...ok while you might be thinking, yes, Caroline that's not quite right, and wondering why I would be at the mall with no job and no money. That is not what this post was intended to be about, and to your question, I plead the 5th. Anyways...

This afternoon I was at the mall and saw something that literally made me do a double take. A woman was browsing through the shoe department at Nordstrom pushing her purse in a stroller.

In case you missed that... she was pushing her PURSE in a STROLLER!!

I mean really?!?! What in the heck was going on there?

Did the thought of quite possibly finding a pair of Jimmy Choo's on clearance get her so worked up that she lost her child in the midst of all of the excitement?

Was she a kidnapper posing as a Jimmy Choo seeker, and just brought the stroller along so that when she found an unsuspecting child to snatch it would look more believable?

Or have women's purses gotten SO big these days that to carry them on your shoulder invetibly means you will crush under the weight, and therefore demand that you purchase a stroller to go along with it?!?!

What would that clearance look like at Nordstrom?!? "Buy one GUCCI handbag and get one GUCCI stroller half-price" ?!?

Really?

I am sure that there are other conclusions one could come to. But no matter which one you choose, there there is something that everyone surely must conclude when seeing lady pushing bag in stroller- "something's just not quite right!"

Happy Saturday!!

Oh and if you happen to be at Northpark later today, in case conclusion 2 is true, be on the look out for this lady, keep your phone close by, and keep your kids even closer!

Are you achin...for some bacon??

Well today I am blogging from the great metropolis of Shreveport, Louisiana. And no, I'm not gambling! (Although I did win 100 bucks one time. Beginners luck. No need to risk it!)

We are here visiting my grandparents- who, I found out are followers of the blog... shout out to you Jackie and Pops! I love you!

As we were driving a long I-20 this afternoon, we came across a rather large brush fire that had just started along the side of the road. It honestly scared me a bit. I could just picture the flames blowing across the road, and engulfing our car. But luckily, Big Bill (my dad) put the pedal to the metal and we avoided the flames!

This roadside fire, however, brought a similar experience to the mind of my sweet, very intelligent sister (she really is... made a perfect 800 on her math on the SAT). Her story was short and sweet and went like this...

"One time, I was driving down the highway and saw a fire just like this on a farm on the side of the road, and it totally smelled like BACON! I just knew the cows were out there in the field burning!"

Clearly, because COWS+FIRE always = bacon!

I guess its a good thing science, culinary, and common sense sections aren't on the SAT!

Thanks for the laughs Linds! Love you!

my headshots are in!

There was nothing like it. A few Saturday's ago I had my first official photo shoot to get some headshots done!! It was awesome! This pretty famous photographer from LA, Kelsey Edwards, was in the Big D for a day to take some photos of "the up and coming talent" of the city. And I, Caroline Lamberth, was one of the lucky ones to get a photo-session scheduled in!

It was truly fantastic- the fan blowing your hair, taylor swift blaring from the speakers because you brought it, multiple cameras taking pictures of your every move!

Let's just say, I had a B-L-A-S-T- Blast!!!

Me, Mom, and Linds (our favorite shot)

I love this one- there was TONS of laughing during this photo-shoot and I am just glad they caught in on film.

The laughter was primarily due to this...
The photographers were trying to go for the pensive, sexy, no-teeth-smile look here- which Mom and Linds seemed to master quite nicely. I on the other hand... well I guess pensive and sexy just isn't quite my thing!

Now, at this point you may be wondering why I have included my mom and sister in all my pictures. Do we possibly have a trio act of singing, dancing, or maybe juggling?

Unfortunately no, although we'd be pretty great!

You may also be wondering why in the heck I am getting headshots. What talent do I possess? Where might you see me next? As a chart topping singer? As one of the dazzling Rockettes? Starring in my favorite broadway musical "In the Heights?" Or strutting it down the runway at Neiman's next big fashion show?

If you know me. You know that unfortunately for me, none of these are true. I cannot carry a tune to save my life. I only have 4 dance moves (and I'm pretty sure none of them are Rockettes worthy!) My acting skills are somewhat lacking. And as far as modeling goes.... well, I might be pretty good at that!

Right!!

If you know me and my fam, you also know that this was not MY photo shoot at all, but rather my beautiful, talented sister Lindsay's, who is in fact more than qualified to do all of the above! This was her photo shoot, and merely my fifteen minutes of fame! Mom and I were merely photographed because we came with Linds to the big shoot! But man, I will say that fifteen minutes of fame was pretty great!

Here's a few of my favorite of Lindsay's real headshots....

Definitely mastered "the look"

I think this one best captures my sweet sister!

I love you Linds! Thanks for letting me join in all the fun!

Testimony

Hey ya'll. Sorry for the incredible lack of blogging lately life is a little crazy and overwhelming right now with finishing my job and trying to figure out details for the future (more on both of these things later!)

But I found something in my office today that I thought you all might find humorous... my testimony that I gave at my 6th grade graduation. While my grasp of the gospel I hope now is deeper, all in all, not much has changed. In fact, this testimony sounds eerily familiar to one of my earlier posts. I guess if you find a good analogy, you better keep it, right?

Enjoy...

Sometimes the Christian life feels like an extra long beam routine. First you must learn the skill. This is like learning about Christ and Salvation. Then you must mount the beam God has for your life. I mounted my beam when I was four years old. Once you get on the beam, you may wobble or be tempted, but Jesus Christ will help you through it.  I've wobbled a lot in my life such as this year I've been tempted to listen to music that I know my parents and the Lord wouldn't like me to listen to.

Sometimes in your routine you might have a quick balance check. When I was little I always used to have balance checks because I doubted my faith and my salvation. I kept reasking Jesus to come into my life because I didn't think he was there.

Other times in your routine you may try something that you know you shouldn't do and fall off. Jesus doesn't want you to fall, but when you do, if you ask him, he will be put you right back up on the beam again. In my routine I have fallen many times but eh Lord has put me back on the beam.

Beam routines aren't all wobbles and falls though. Sometimes, you will do a skill and stick it perfectly. This is when you do something you know is right and do it good  and for the Lord. We know we can do this from Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."

Sometimes in your routine you will have to take a leap towards getting to me more like Christ. Last summer I took a leap when I started to read my Bible more and started to care more about my actions.

You may repeat the pattern of wobbles, falls, sticks, and leaps through all your life. Sometimes your life or routine will have to come to an end. You and I will dismount our beams and stick our landings at the gates of heaven. Then God, the final judge, will give you your score. If you even mounted the beam you will get a 10! Everyone, including Jesus your coach, will be rejoicing because we know we didn't deserve the score, but God gave it as a free gift- just as he gave his son and all we have to do is accept him.

Right now I'm in the middle of my routine. I am wobbling and falling and sticking all the time. God has sent great friends and parents to help me through my routine of life. They challenge me to take leaps and steps to become more like Christ. I am glad they are on the beam right next to mine. My routine is just beginning but I've fallen many times. In the upcoming part of my routine, I want to read the whole Bible. I know I'll keep wobbling and falling but as Psalm 94 says, "When I say, 'My foot is slipping' your love O Lord supported me."

Still Wobbling and Falling,
Caroline

TOMmy and Jessica

This weekend my cousin Tommy is getting married and giving our family the sweetest gift possible, his incredible bride Jessica! I really love Jessica and admire her so much. She is absolutely beautiful inside and out. And she truly has the kindest heart of anyone around. One expression of her kind and tender heart was how she wanted to spend tonight, her last night before all the wedding festivities start and she is a married woman- a Lamberth, which is a pretty frightening thing in its own right!

Tonight, Jessica had us all (her sweet friends and the girls in our family) over to her apartment for a TOMS decorating party! For those of you who don't know, TOMS Shoes is an incredible, charitable company that for every pair of shoes you buy, they donate one to a child in need.

Ok, let's be honest...I am sure all you bloggers are far more familiar with TOMS shoes than I am, seeing as I just bought my first pair today. I figure you blogger-types are also the TOMS shoes- wearing types. I am excited that now I can be "in" with all my blogger friends...and maybe"in" with all my blogger friends that actually don't know that I exist, but whose blogs on international adoptions, charity water, and inner-city ministry that I frequently stalk!

But anyways, I digress...

Tonight, I got to decorate my very own pair of TOMS shoes! My friends at dinner were none too encouraging and none too confident in my ability to decorate a cute pair of shoes. So for all you doubters, jokes on you. Look how great I did...

Ok well actually, joke's on me! Those aren't mine but some other girl's I stole for a picture. THESE are mine!

Well, while my lack of artistic ability once again became lucidly evident! We had a great time!

Maggie, Me, Jessica, Lindsay, Becky

Please take notice of Lindsay's shoes...she is VERY proud of them.

The cousins after a really fun night. We love our TOMS Shoes!

Oh, and while we are on the subject of the shoes, can anyone help me locate the TOMS shoe guy?!?!?! I've seen him on those cell phone commercials and he's pretty cute...

Ok really cute. Who am I kidding?

Melissa, maybe you could help me since you have been so successful at your celeb stalking lately!

Again, I digress...

Congratulations, TOMmy and Jessica! What a blessing it is to be a part of your special day! I love you!

Congrats to the Champion

When I started this blog, I swore to myself and to a few of you that I would not blog about Reality TV.

So...

I just wanted to give a shout out to my girl, Shawn Johnson, for winning the Olympic Gold Medal in Beijing!!!!

(Oh, and for winning Dancing With the Stars tonight... If you are into that sort of thing, which clearly, I am not! :) )

The Perfect Ten may no longer exist in gymnastics, but it sure does in ballroom dancing!

Way to Go Shawn!

in the adult world

A few weeks ago I was dining with some friends at PF Changs for a friend's baby shower, when I had a shocking realization.  A group of high school students came into the restaurant looking all fancy schmancy and dressed up for the prom. One of my friends looked over at me and said, "Wow, doesn't that seem like forever ago." To which I thought, "Not really." And this is when it hit me that I actually felt more connected to the world where people were going to prom then the world where people are having babies (as you have been made keenly aware of in an earlier post!)

After our Bible Study last night I realized that there were some things, some social rules if you will, that I am going to have to relearn as I transition from the teen world to the real, adult world. In just a month from now I am going to have to learn how to eat, and dress, and talk, and text like someone who is 27 and not 17. Because in the adult world, I am pretty sure things don't work like they do in the teen world...

In the adult world, you can't actually eat pizza and toffee bars and ice cream pie for dinner. (A rule I should have learned a while back despite living in teen world...)

In the adult world, it is not acceptable to wear Nike shorts and a t-shirt any and every where you go.

In the adult world, you aren't looked highly upon when you don't speak in complete sentences and the most common word you use in those fragments is "like."

In the adult world, you can't really get away with going to see every teen movie at least twice- secretly liking it, but publicly claiming that you only went for "work."

In the adult world, "work" won't include laying out by the pool, endless excursions to TCBY, and going to Six Flags. (I actually despise Six Flags, so won't really be sad to see this one go.)

In the adult world, people won't be interested in conversations where the topics include who is going to homecoming with who, and what stunts the cheerleaders did at the pep rally last Friday.

In the adult world, you can't make announcements via text... ok, well maybe you can. But they probably can't start out with "Yo Yo Yo, whats up my peeps?" and then end with "Lylas". Can you imagine...."Yo, yo, yo, whats up my peeps? Meeting in the conference room at 10! Be there or be square! Lylas!"

Yes, I do send my Bible Study announcements like that or in poem form.

So basically, I have a lot to learn and quite the transition ahead of me!

On the upside, perhaps once in adult world, when I am standing with two 15 year olds and we run into someone's mom, that mom won't pat  me on the shoulder and say, "What's your name sweetie? I don't think I've met you before!"

Have a great day, my peeps! Lylas!

Oops, good thing I am not in adult world yet!

baby boom...

I'll settle the rumors that this title might evoke right now. No, I am not pregnant!

Ok, so I am pretty positive that that thought didn't cross any of your minds, but I figured I'd cover my bases just in case!

Now to the real post: Upon graduating from college, something comes upon you that you are completely unfamiliar with- the wedding boom! All of a sudden friends start getting engaged left and right, and you start doing things that only months before would have seemed quite odd- you know, like spending $200 dollars on a dress that makes you look like a shiny gum ball or a rather large blade of grass, like buying your friends towels and pyrex for presents, or eating endless tiny pimento cheese sandwiches for lunch!

But after a few years in the wedding boom, you begin to master the wedding etiquette. And after about 5 years, I believe I've done it, I have finally mastered it! (I, however, am not quite sure my wedding coordinator friends would agree since I am the ONLY one of our friends who they do not hire to help with their weddings. Don't worry, Mindy and Karen, I'm not bitter:))

But regardless of their professional opinions, in my humble opinion, I have mastered it. I send in my response cards on time. I buy my gift a few days early, so that it has time to be gift wrapped and I don't have to pretend like the Pottery Barn bag with tissue coming out is the "way it was supposed to look." I arrive on time, sit on the right side of the church, and never bring a guest if I am not "And Guest-ed" (Although this might be for other reasons:))

Ok, so I had all this perfected and mastered, but just when I was getting the hang of it, something new and totally unfamiliar hit me over the head like a baseball bat...THE BABY BOOM. Seriously, I am not sure what is in the water but it seems like ALL my friends are getting pregnant! That is how you get pregnant right, something in the water?? (Sorry, they didn't really cover those details at my private christian school!).

This baby boom has brought with it a whole new set of things I have to learn:

1. How to wrap your gift. No one told me that you should wrap your shower gift in pink if it's a girl, blue if it's a boy, and some sort of gender-neutral pastel if your friends are going the old fashioned way and not finding out. So, this November I showed up at a shower for my friend Bess and her sweet little girl, with my gift all nicely wrapped in seasonal wrapping paper-dark greens, deep reds and oranges. I think it tried it hide it under my shirt when I walked in and saw that everything else was wrapped in a precious shade of pink. I was so mortified when I laid it on top of all that cute pink stuff, and just wanted to crawl under the couch when she asked who it was from. All I could do was awkwardly shrug my shoulders and say, "Happy Thanksgiving!"

2. Etiquette on suggesting a name! The main thing I have learned thus far, let people name their kid whatever they want. I keep offering up my name for people's children. I mean Caroline goes so well as either a first or middle name, and in my humble opinion is a great complement to any last name! If, however, they don't go with Caroline, I like to offer up Nastia as a good second choice! You've got to with a name that will ensure success, and what better than the legacy of an Olympic Gold-Medalist. This is when people usually cringe and say they are probably going to go with a family name. I mean, I guess that's cool too.

3. What in the heck to do when you go visit someone in the hospital. This is where my awkwardness just shines. I have no idea what to do, or what to say. Case and point- yesterday, I went with some friends to visit my dear friend Lily and her new baby girl, Abigail, in the hospital. Kim immediately grabs little Abigail, who I am too petrified to hold. Bess immediately asks her questions about how labor went, how she is feeding, etc. I have absolutely no idea what to do, so I choose to awkwardly sit in the chair in the corner, tightly gripping my purse, and trying to think of something good to say. Unfortunately,  only question that comes across my mind to ask is if that piece of chocolate cake from the hospital cafeteria is any good!

Basically, I am back to square one. If anyone has any thoughts as to how I might wade my way through this baby boom, I am all ears. Many thanks to my friends who have given me the opportunity to master this new etiquette, thanks to you who have been patient with me as I learn,  and special thanks to the ones who have trusted me to hold their children!

I guess for now, I will just keep practicing, so that one day I will master this too, and be ready for my very own little Nastia to enter the world!

shout out to a friend

I would like to give a shout out (HOLLA!!) to a dear old friend who was really there for me today...

This is a friend who frequently gets my day off to a good start.

This is a friend who calms my nerves and makes me feel comfortable when sitting in my seminary class surrounded by only men.

This is a friend with whom I have shared countless lunches, but our time together never gets old.

This is a friend whose presence is severely missed when I haven't experienced it by 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

This is a friend who gives 4-hour long meetings a little pizzaz.

This is a friend who though I have tried to cut her out of my life on several occasions, thankfully keeps crawling her way back in.

This is a friend who when I am tired and down gives me that extra "umph" to keep on going.

This is a friend who is loved and cherished not just by me, but by many- undoubtedly by many of you!

This is a friend who truly always fills my cup!

Thank you dear friend, for all you do. I really needed you today.

Love,
Caroline

april fools

Wow! Unbelievable! My heart is still beating about a 100 miles a minutes as I am still recovering from the best April Fools Trick ever!

As many of you know, I am a former gymnast, and one with unrealized Olympic aspirations. Even at 27, I still have all this pent up love for gymnastics and it all seems to come out every 4 years around Olympic Time! This past year, I was particularly obsessed with the Olympics in Beijing, with American gymnastics, and especially with Nastia Liukin, who as all of you should know was the Olympic All-Around Gold Medalist!

Nastia lives and trains right outside of Dallas, but is now a student at SMU. (Which is literally 3 blocks from where I live). She has been spotted around the neighborhood, and it has been my dream (not kidding) to run into her somewhere!

So, tonight after Bible Study, my phone rings twice. It is my best friend Kim, who I obviously screen, being the good Bible Study leader that I am. She then calls, Meredith, one of my Senior Girls, who then reports to me: "Caroline, Kim is at TCBY and Nastia is there!"

I immediately grab all my stuff, pretty much grab Meredith, and without saying goodbye to any of my other girls SPRINT out the door. As, we are almost to the car, Hannah sprints out the door screaming, 'I'm coming, I'm coming! NASTIA!"

With Hannah barely in the car, we peel off and speed our way over to TCBY. I have never experienced the pick-up in my car quite like that. I am going 50 on neighborhood streets, running red lights, and actually almost took out a couple who were on their nighttime stroll.

Kim texts me on the way, "She's still here. HURRY." I try to call her and call her, but she doesn't answer. Obviously...she was talking to Nastia and trying to stall her for me!

I'm driving, so excited I can hardly stand it, my heart is beating so fast! Phrases coming out of my mouth while I sped down Abrams included:

Oh my gosh, this is seriously the best day of my life!

If she's not still there I am going to be so devastated!

Wow, this is a dream come true.

So excited! All I wanted to do before I leave for Philly is run into Nastia and the Bushes!

We pull into the parking lot, I don't see Kim's car. But am anxiously peering in the window at TCBY, barely containing my excitement. But Nastia is nowhere to be seen, and neither is Kim for that matter.

"Wait, maybe we are at the wrong TCBY" I think outloud. (There is not another TCBY that I know of.)

Immediatley, Hannah and Meredith look at each other, start dying laughing, and shout APRIL FOOLS!!!

Wow, jokes on me!!!

While I was completely devastated:) I give major props to these two little pranksters! Best Joke pulled on me ever. (Even better than the Christmas card they sent out of me this Christmas to everyone I know. A picture of just me, well really the pic was mainly of my huge bangs! with a little poem under it that said something about high-kicks and mistletoe!)

Props to you Mabes and Mere! I am still laughing, and still hoping I will run into Nastia.

One day, one day...and that day will be the best day of my life!!!!

Death by Yoga

I do not consider myself to be a particularly paranoid person, but today I became acutely aware of something: my yoga teacher is trying to kill me.

I just had this hunch from the beginning of class today that death was looming in the room. It was confirmed when we did not even get to start in child's pose, and from the fact that I am convinced she was giving me the evil "stink-eye" as she peered back at me through the mirror.

And then it started, her attempt to take my life.
Her weapon: the endless series of hover-plank-hover-up dog:

HOVER...

PLANK...

HOVER...

UP DOG...

Seriously? I mean does she not know that it was spring break this week, and that most of us had been lazily laying on the beach sipping pinas all day?

Ok, well I hadn't. But didn't she know everyone else had?

I guess i just wanted to write this post to let all my faithful readers (I guess this just really means mom...but whatever), that I narrowly escaped death this morning around 11:55 am. But I did escape nonetheless.

However, if you do not hear from me after next Saturday around noon, here is a clue:

It was Kari...In the Yoga Room...
With the Chair...

Namaste-

Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places

For years one of my best friends and I have talked about staring a blog about our dating lives. And honestly, I really hope we will one day. Our friends tell us it will be pretty funny. (Not exactly sure what that means:)). But for now, that project has been postponed... maybe because we are too busy, possibly because we are not ready to put such self-deprecating information on the world wide web, but probably because there might be an appalling lack of content.

But anyways, if we were to start this blog, my experience this past weekend would for sure be on it. And thus, I share it with you:

Dating in your twenties can be a really fun, but more often than not a really funny experience. And for all of you that got married right out of college you are definitely missing out on something:)

Dating is also something I am personally not really good at. I tend to get extremely awkward around the boys who I have a crush on... you know, saying stupid things, constantly putting my hair back behind my ears, and not looking them in the eye. But the ones who I don't have a crush on, I have nooo problem being myself. Thus it tends to be the latter who give you the offer of a date. I mean who wants to ask out the weird fidgety girl who keeps looking at the ceiling.

And this past weekend, I got the offer of a life time.

I was with our high school and middle school kids on our mission trip to Austin. On Sunday we worshipped at Church Under the Bridge- a congregation of primarily homeless men and women that literally meets under 1-35 in downtown Austin. Its pretty amazing! Our primary goal while we are there is to get to know these men and women and their stories, worship alongside them, and pray with them. And most of the time this is what happens.

But not for me....

I see this one man (we'll call him Bob:)) from across the parking lot. He smiles at me so I figure he is up for a chat. After a brief introduction, I realize an evangelistic chat was not really what he had in mind. He asks me how long we are in town. I respond saying we are here till Tuesday. He then responds by asking me what I was doing Monday around 5? And would I like to meet up to go for a ride on his motorcycle?

Seriously? I have never been on a motorcycle date. It could be pretty fun to be a biker babe. I think I'd wear a leather jacked and helmet quite nicely.

But seriously? I told him that unfortunately I had some responsibilities with our kids that I just didn't think  I could get out of.

Bob said that was fine. But that he'd love to keep in touch. And that if I ever came back to Austin, that motorcycle invite was still valid.  For sure!!

He then handed me his card, which read:

Bob
How can I help?

And 4 Relaxing Excitement:

and on the back:

Good Times with No Drama

Finally!!! What I have been looking for this whole time!

**I left out his actual contact info, but if YOU in fact are looking for Good Times with No Drama, I've got the card handy!!

I didn't mean to?!?!

Tonight I was reminded of a fun story that I think you will all enjoy:

Ok, I have been taking some of my high school girls for the past year or so over to a local ministry that provides temporary housing for women and their children. We usually help serve dinner, but for a while were in charge of putting on the "children's chapel" in which we were supposed to teach Scripture to 20-35 children ages 2-16 right after dinner! Needless to say, I have never felt more out of control in my life!

Well, one such nigh we decided to teach the creation account and to help the kids understand, we decided for them to make a mural to illustrate each day. And so, with a table full of various crayons and markers they drew pictures representing each day... light/suns/even light bulbs for day 1, trees and flowers for day 3, people and various kinds of animals for day 6.

Day 7, in my mind presented quite a predicament. How do you illustrate God resting? The answer however was obvious to the kids. Duh...beds.

So they illustrated the mural with beds. Harmless right?

Well, not so much. While glancing over the day 7 mural, one of my girls noticed that the student she was working with had added a little something extra. (This little boy was around 8 or 9...we'll call him J.)  Next to one of the  beds, J. had written "I want to have sex with her."

Well ok, my high school girl is freaked out and I TOTALLY don't know what to do. But I decide that I need to confront J. on this matter.  The following is our conversation.

" J, did you write this?"

"No."

"J, seriously, did you write this?"

"No, I promise."

"J, I know that you wrote this."

Then J, in the sweetest but guiltiest little voice says...

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to write it. I meant to write JESUS!!"

:) You see he knew the right "church" answer all along. It was just his crayon that got confused!!
