Air Travel...

Well, friends! After a very long day of travel, I have arrived here in Philly safe and sound. For those of you were wondering, I did not get the tiki hut room again this year! I'm honestly pretty bummed out about it and wondering if the conference is going to be nearly as fun in just a plain ol' hotel room.

Today, I spent far longer than I would ever like to in airports and on airplanes. Traveling for extended hours gives you a lot of thinking time. Don't worry, I will not post all today's thoughts on this blog. Too exposing...I will however post the top ten questions that came to my mind regarding air travel. And without further adieu, here they are, in no particular order...

10. Why would an airport advertise for a TCBY that they do not have, thus making hungry travelers walk down an extra 10 gates only to be disappointed?

9. Why do they tell you to wipe out the sink basin in the airplane bathroom with a towel when you can just as easily lift up the stopper and let all the water out?

8. Why is it so important to turn off all your electronics before take off and landing? Seriously, if I had accidentally left my i-pod on, what would happen to my plane?

7, Why in the world would an airline make you fly through Dallas on your way from St. Louis to Philadelphia? I mean, have they ever looked at a map?

6. Why was American Airlines not willing to work with my social schedule and give me a little longer lay-over in DFW so I could get out and see some peeps?

5. Why is it that restaurants like McDonalds, Chilis, and Auntie Anne's pretzels always taste so much better in airports? (Ok, I shouldn't throw Auntie Anne's under the bus, I love that place!)

4. Is the only way to get free stuff on the airplane these days to flirt incessantly with the flight attendant? The guys in front of me got free vodka AND peanuts after shamelessly flirting with our stewardess. So not fair... the male flight attendant was at the front of the plane.

3. Is it funny to anyone else that people will have deep conversations for an entire 3 hour plane ride and then finally tell each other their names when the plane is about to land?

2. Is taking a carry on bag in order to save $60 (yes...that is $30 for each bag, each way!) really going to save me money later on when I have to have back surgery from lugging my ridiculously heavy bags through the airport all day?

1. Who are all these people? Where are they going? What are their stories?

The last question really did get me as I walked to the back of the plane... I was just one of maybe 2oo people on my flight, which was just one of the many flights that left today, out of a single airport. Really made me wonder...what is everyone's story?

Finally, I would like to give a shout out to my brother John (who undoubtedly will NEVER read this...so if you see him, tell him). Out of his graciousness and in exchange for my couches, he bought me this ticket! Thanks, John!

More from Philly coming soon...

God's Gracious Timing...

Today, I have officially been here for 3 months. Time is such a funny thing. Sometimes it feels like I just arrived, and at other times it feels as if I have always been here, that this has always been my life. But regardless of how time feels, I know how my heart feels today- so thankful for this season, so thankful to be here, so thankful that the Lord has graciously given me this opportunity, this privilege.

I am also so thankful for the great privilege I have tomorrow- going up to Philly for the CCEF Conference! In these two things, I see God's gracious timing so clearly. As many of you know, Philly and CCEF had been my plan for so very long, a plan I had held so tightly to- even after coming to Covenant. And as excited as I was about the Conference, I also dreaded and at the same time hoped, that this weekend would confirm that I wasn't supposed to be here in STL at all, that my plan had been right- God's wrong, and that I could come back here knowing I was supposed to go up there.

But God's timing is so good! Today, I sat in class thinking- "I love this so much." And as I think about life, I honestly would not want to be anywhere else right now. And tomorrow I go to Philly, for what I hope will be an incredibly shaping, challenging, and refreshing weekend. But at the end of it, I know I will come home to a place, and people, and a life I love! Praise the Lord!

Seriously, I couldn't be more excited about the Conference. Over the past several years, it has been one of the most encouraging and influential parts of my life and ministry. I can only guess that this years is going to be the same. The entire weekend is on sex- looking at it from a biblical-creation, fall, redemption, and glorification framework. I am really excited because this is a topic I don't think the church talks about well or enough. I'm sure I will have much to say upon returning from the Conference, and as I think and ponder these things in the days and weeks to come.

For those of you who are not familiar with CCEF, check them out! There are not many people I would rather sit under and learn from than these godly, humble people who so profoundly apply the truths of the gospel to the realities and struggles of life.

Also, I am anxiously anticipating my hotel room. Last year without even requesting it, I got to stay in this...
I can only hope I'll be so lucky this year!

Library Fun

Now I know many of you think that the title to this post is an utter oxymoron. I likewise shared your opinion until this Saturday. I had been effectively avoiding spending an entire day in the library this semester, but on Saturday I had no other choice- I had to give in. And so, on what was probably the most beautiful day we have had in a looong time, I packed up my stuff and headed up to the library for a focused day of study and research! You should be proud.

Or maybe not. On this particular afternoon, I managed to find plenty of people to talk to in the library and found the one person studying in the student center who clearly needed me to talk to her long enough for her to become my new favorite person here in STL.

During this "study break" of which the duration shall remain undefined, I left my computer unattended. Clearly someone else in the library was looking for a little fun, someone, I might add whose identity is still completely unknown to me. Because when I returned to my computer a little (ok a lot) later that afternoon, I found this on my desktop...

Nothing like that to give you good laugh. Nothing like that to tell you you just may have been away from your computer for a little too long. And nothing like that to creep you out enough to get you packing your books and getting the heck out of there as fast as you possibly can. I mean, for real, what if that cat was roaming the stacks? Needless to say, I was out the door in less than 10...

How Firm A Foundation

I have been reminded much over the past several months that life in our broken world is full of suffering-suffering that truly takes all shapes and sizes- some is temporary, some will last for a lifetime. Suffering is something we would rarely choose and it typically comes in forms we would never expect. My old boss and pastor, Mark, always used to say that in this life you are always either going into a trial, going through a trial, or coming out of a trial. The longer I live and the more I am in relationships, the more I realize this is true.

In the midst of this the Lord keeps reminding me that the gospel must and does speak to this, that it provides light in our darkness, strength in our weakness, and hope in our despair- a hope that is not a vain wishing, but is rather sure and secure, that does not disappoint because it is wrapped up in the person and promises of Jesus Christ. Our hope is that while none of our trials and suffering seem "slight and momentary" what lies ahead of us as believers is "a weight of glory beyond all comparison." Our hope is for that glorious day where we will be ushered out of our trials and suffering, and the kingdom of God will be fully and finally ushered in! And our comfort as we wait for this day, lies in the glorious reality of the presence and purpose of God in our sufferings.

We sang this hymn today in church that was such a great reminder to me of these truths. It reminded me of the promises, person, and purpose that are present with us in our sufferings. And it hope to cling to and truths to pray for those I know and love who right now truly find themselves in the "rivers of sorrow" and "fiery trials" and who feel without a doubt that theirs is "the soul that all hell doth endeavor to break." May these words encourage your heart as well...

How Firm a Foundation...

How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than you to you he hath said
To you, who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

"Fear not I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am your God and will still give you aid;
I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand."

"When through the deep waters I call you to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not you overflow
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless
And sanctify to you your deepest distress."

"When through fiery trials your pathway shall life,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be your supply;
The flame shall not hurt you, I only design
Your dross to consume and your gold to refine."

"The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell, should endeavor to break,
I'll never, no never, no never forsake."

Home is Where the Heart Is

Last week at this very hour, I was packing up my suitcase- complete with all my laundry and dry cleaning- to go home for a few days. It was our "fall break" from school and though, I had initially planned on staying here, during a week of loneliness in September, I went ahead and booked my ticket home. I am honestly so glad I did that then because I had no idea how much I would need it now.

I love St. Louis and am truly very happy here right now, but there really is nothing like going home. Nothing like seeing your church from the airplane window as you fly in. Nothing like walking out of baggage claim to see your best friend waiting for you! Nothing like walking into the neighborhood cookie shop and people telling you they have missed you. Nothing like spending countless hours in amazing conversation with your parents. Nothing like driving down streets and feeling like you never left. Nothing like eating all your meals out and never having to look at a menu. Nothing like surprisingly running into friends who you didn't expect to be in town. Nothing like worshipping in your home church. Nothing like hour after hour being spent with nearly everyone you know and love. Nothing like just being with people who know you. Nothing like living your old life all over again for just a few days. There is nothing like being at home.

For all the many of you whom I had the privilege of spending time with this weekend- whether for a few minutes or a few hours- I can't even begin to describe to you who much joy it brought me! It truly filled my cup.

On Friday night, I couldn't contain my joy and just kept telling my parents over and over and over....and over again- "This has seriously been the best day!"

I do wish however that my parents were the only ones I expressed that excitement to that night. Unfortunately, our academic dean at the seminary knows how excited I was too. I received an email that evening from her telling me that I got into a class for which I had been on the wait-list. The following was my reply:

Diane, Thank you SO much! I am so excited about this! This is the exact schedule I was hoping for! Thank you for all your hard work on this! -Caroline

Pretty sure she and the rest of the office are getting a good laugh and wondering how in the world this 8th grader got into Covenant!

Oh well, I guess true joy is really hard to hide! To all my family and friends in the Big D- you bless me beyond belief! Can't wait to see you soon- Thanksgiving is less than a month away!

Latent Anger

You know those times where you have been really angry but now feel like you are over it. Then, all of a sudden, something happens that brings back up all that latent anger and reveals that you are not, in fact, over it at all? Well tonight, for me, has been one of those times.

Many of you may not know because I was not blogging in August of 2008, but I am a HUGE fan of the Olympics! So much of a fan that in 2008, I threw an Olympic party with complete with Olympic themed desserts...

The Olympics bring much joy in me, but they also bring out a part of me that most of the
time I like to keep hidden- my anger! Last Olympics, a bunch of cute little Chinese girls, revealed the anger that lie so deeply in my heart. Why you, ask? Because these cute little Chinese girls, I believe, cheated their way to Olympic Gold. You see, you have to be 16 to compete in the Olympics. And I mean, look at this picture...there is just no way!

Well, I thought I had gotten over it. Until tonight...as I lay here on my parents couch watching the Gymnastics World Championships that my father so graciously tivoed for me. As I am watching this little girl compete, who is clearly only 7, all that latent anger has resurged with a vengeance!

The commentators keep talking about how hard it is for her to get all the way up on the vault or transition between the bars. Obviously... because she is only 5 and not even 4" tall. Maybe when she turns 6 she will have a better shot!

Ok...enough of my ranting! Shout out though to Bridget Sloan who won the World Championship! She at least 18! And though she's no Nastia, she's pretty good!

Way to go USA! Again in the gymnastics world I am proud to be an American!

Sunday Joys...

Sundays have always been my favorite day of the week. Back in Dallas, Sundays brought together most everything and most everyone that I loved. From being a part of Sunday worship, to seeing all "my girls", to singing in our high school Sunday School class, to those blueberry donut holes from Mustang, to lunch with my whole extended family, and to most likely 2 or 3 Bible Studies in the evenings...my Sundays were filled with things and people and events that brought me great, great joy!

So needless to say, I was very fearful that Sundays up here in St. Louis were going to be the most difficult, and the most lonely days for me. For here, I am going to a church where no one really knows me and I am slowly getting to know people, I am going to a church where I don't work and therefore, don't have that identity following me. Sunday lunches are usually a frozen meal or PB&J from my basement mini-kitchen, and I don't have endless Bible Studies to prepare for and lead that evening. Sundays up here were going to be a whole new ball game. And I was not sure I was going to like it!

But by God's sheer and amazing grace, Sundays up here in St. Louis are once again my absolute favorite day of the week- though they are drastically different. For the past several Sundays, as I have driven home from church... my mind has reflected upon how my heart is just overflowing with joy! God is graciously giving me joy in things and experiences I have never (or not in a very long time) known.

Church is a whole new experience. I can't remember a time when I was a part of church where I wasn't the pastors daughter and wasn't on staff. While these are experiences I loved and would never change, there is a certain freedom, for this season of my life, in going to church and just being a part of the congregation. Just one in the crowd who has come to church for no other reason than to worship, to meet with God, and to be restored. In a place where I am not really known yet and don't yet known everyone, I have found church to be the sweetest refuge where I just get to meet with my Savior. This has been a season of getting caught of up in the worship of Christ and the wonder of the gospel that I have never known.

Sunday afternoons also are a whole new experience. A friend encouraged me early on to truly take this day as a day of rest- something I honestly have never done. While really doing this has often been a struggle, God is teaching me so much about how to not only rest but to rest in him. He is teaching me in real and experiential ways that the commandments he gives us, specifically in regards to the Sabbath, are truly for our good and for our joy! As I got to sit in a coffee shop today without any school work, I could not even attest to the joy that came from the freedom of not having anything glaring to do and the ability to engage what I have been learning all week at a heart and devotional level- to truly have the freedom to seek and rest in him.

Anyways, I probably could go on. But just wanted to thank those of you who have prayed for me- especially on Sundays- knowing that they had the potential to be so hard. God has been overwhelmingly gracious, and my joy is overwhelming to. I am, by his grace, getting to experience a little taste of what the Psalmist describes- "in your presence is fullness of joy." Truly makes me long for the day when our experience will not be the taste, but will be the real thing and we will get to experience deeper, fuller joy than we have ever known. Oh how we long for his return.

Come Lord Jesus Come!

Days of Elijah

I love my new church! Yesterday I seriously could have stayed all day long. I was truly sad when the last hymn ended. I had this overwhelming sense of "this is exactly what I was made for." How true it is. We were made for worship- to, as the hymn says, get "lost in wonder, love, and praise." This was my experience yesterday. I am thankful for small taste God graciously gave me of what it will one day be like to be in his presence! Come, Lord Jesus...

Yesterday, we sang a song that I was sure was brand new to the church scene, as I had never heard it before. Singing in the midst of the congregation filled me with so much joy! I asked one of my friends if she had heard it. She laughed and said it had been around for forever. So I went to download it when I got back to school. Indeed it had. The most popular version by none other than Twila Paris! I downloaded it nonetheless and have been singing and dancing to it all day long.

Instead of leaving you with a visual of that, I will leave you with another. The music video that I found on YouTube. It truly dates the song, but enjoy it anyways.

And here it is..my new favorite song...DAYS OF ELIJAH...

My Fears: Calmed and Confirmed

For years I have had two primary fears about moving to the North. And yes, by north, I do mean anything north of the Oklahoma-Texas line. They are as follows:

1. No good Mexican Food
2. Cold Weather

* Not necessarily in that order, not necessarily not in that order. But nevertheless, the order that I will address them in this blog post!

The first is my fear of no Mexican food. Which you clearly know about if you have been following the blog at all- particularly since I left Dallas and arrived in STL- as I think I mention it in virtually every post. So really no need to go into any more detail except to say that this fear has been calmed and pretty much assuaged because last night as some friends and I were on our way to see Phantom at the amazing Fox Theatre we stumbled upon some tex-mex goodness.

Yes, real Texas-style Tex Mex here in the Lou! It's called Chuy! It appealed to Taylor (one of my hs friends here at Covenant with me) and I because the name was so close to Chuy's- which while not the best Tex-Mex in Texas would be pretty much amazing up here! So we ventured inside...first thing to catch my eye a Texas Flag and a sign that said something like "Everything's better in Texas!" Amen!

And from them on it just kept getting better- real queso, and by that I mean the yellow kind, great chips, quesadillas that didn't contain some kind of mystery sauce, and even a menu item called The Austin. It was such a delight and I can't wait to go back. Tonight too soon?

For all you Texas transplants up here in STL, give Chuy a try. You will not be disappointed.

Ok, but as for my other fear. THE COLD. This fear has not, I repeat NOT been calmed in the past few days. Rather it has been confirmed, tragically confirmed. It is going to be so stinking cold up here, and I seriously hate it!

For instance, today is October 2nd. The time in Dallas when I am wanting wear my fall clothes, but can't because the moment you put on a sweater you literally start to sweat, which though in the name, I don't believe is the point of the sweater. Well, up here in STL it seems like they skipped sweater weather all together. When I got in the car this morning my thermostat said 54!

54 degrees?!?! In October? Are you kidding me? And may I just say that 54 degrees up here is not the same 54 down south. It is FREEZING! I had to come home this afternoon and put on my sweatshirt and curl up in a blanket and am contemplating never leaving the house again till it gets warmer. When is that anyways?

Don't answer that!

I have mentioned to several people today that I am freezing and that I hate this weather. To which they replied, "Oh, Caroline, you are going to die."

Yes, I am sure I might. I don't know how to handle it now. What will it be like when it is 9 degrees! I have no concept for that...

Oh, and when it snows- which I have no idea how to drive in by the way. And seeing as I am not that great a driver to begin with...

Anyways, I am sorry for complaining. I realize the blog really shouldn't be for that. Please forgive me.

Thanks for reading. If you do not hear from me between now and April, it is because I have frozen up here, hands and all, leaving me completely unable to type...

Happy Friday. Especially if it is warm where you are. I am off to find some birds. Maybe they will let me migrate south with them...

A Little Update

Dear blog followers- if there are still any of you out there,

I am so sorry for the lack of blogging as of late, and assure you that I will once again try to do better in the future. Life up here in STL is keeping me very busy, but as most of you know, I like it that way. I keep telling the sweet family that I live with that if I am home for more than 6 hours 2 days in a row to go ahead and be worried about me. Busy usually = good in my book. Unfortunately, however this busyness has not left much time for blogging. I will try for some more fun or more insightful posts soon. But for now, here is a lil update on the happenings up here in STL.

I guess the best way to sum up so much of what is going on in and around me is that things are becoming more real. School is definitely feeling more real as I had my first big paper and first big test last week. Until then, I had conveniently forgotten that going to school actually meant you had to turn things in and be tested over the material you are learning. I wish I had made this realization in my Greek class earlier because I was so captivated by the lectures that I had forgotten to take notes! Whoops..

The fact that I actually live here is becoming much more real. I seem to have found a routine, and God has graciously blessed me with some great friends, a church, and a community group I just joined tonight. I see his gracious provision and sheer grace in so much, and I am so thankful. Life in Dallas, though so so real in my heart, does now seem like a little while ago. That is weird, but I think good in the sense that it means I am beginning to feel somewhat planted here.

I was able to go see my family this weekend in OKC. Lindsay had a big musical and so we all got together. It was so refreshing to reconnect with everyone face to face. It had been 6 weeks, which was like a marathon for me. And it truly filled my cup. I flew back at the crack of dawn Monday morning. Gate A7 was going to St. Louis, Gate A9 to Dallas. It was a very weird experience not getting on that Dallas bound flight, and made it really real that for now, this is my new home. But God has given me such grace in the transition back this week, and I have been thankful to be here.

But above all this what has become more real to me over the last few weeks is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Over these weeks, I have had the truths of the gospel expounded to me in such powerful ways, but I have also had my heart exposed in profound ways. So often, I get to the end of the day and think "really? that is really what is in my heart?" So many times I have been shocked at what I have seen in my heart, in what I am really like. Which, I guess means I don't really know my heart all that well. It is hard, and I pray humbling, and I am thankful that the Lord doesn't show us all of ourselves at once. I am thankful however that the Lord is doing all of this in me in the context of a place where I am constantly reminded of his gospel and his grace. My sin is not the end of the story. My Savior is! Alleluia!

What a privilege it is to be here. It has taken me a while to see that, but my God's grace I am beginning to. A pastor reminded us on Friday that God's call in our lives is beyond us, bigger than us, and yet somehow involves us. And God's call on my life to bring me here right now is no exception. It is my prayer that this will be real to me, and as one hymn says that "out of unrest and arrogant pride I will come." That I will continued to be humbled and find peace in the reality of his call.

To Him who has called us and To Him who is with us, To Him be the Glory...

Mastering the Art of...

For those of you have read the title and are thinking I about to follow it up with "French Cooking," you are deeply mistaken and clearly don't know me at all. It would be great if I could master the art of any cooking at all- especially, French cooking. (Actually, I'd prefer Tex-Mex but I don't think Julia wrote a book on that!)But alas, I can only cook one dish, one side, chocolate chip cookies, and a wonderful cheese dip with bacon on the top! So no, Julia Childs and the other Julie from NY (for those that have seen the movie) would not be very proud of me. And I am pretty sure I won't be having any food critics down to my basement mini-kitchen anytime soon! But I will tell you what I have recently mastered the art of...

EATING AT HOME!

For those of you who don't know me, you are probably thinking to yourselves "Whoopty-Doo!" For those of you who do know me, you can go ahead and pick your jaws up off the floor. It is true, I, Caroline, have officially mastered the art of eating at home. You would be shocked how many meals I eat here. I have even found that is possible to go an entire day without spending any money on food! Shocker, I know!

**Note: I still have not found it is possible to go a whole day without spending money on diet coke! Oh, well..maybe one day!

For those of you who are wondering how I did it, or any of you who are chronic eat-outers, I would like to share with you some things that I have learned. So here it is...

Ten Tips to Mastering the Art of Eating at Home:

10. Always have a jar of peanut butter ready! I am now sooo organic and go for the all natural one. You have to stir up the oils in there but it is well worth the work!

9. When tired of the boring sandwich, get yo-self some tortillas to make a wrap!

8. Always have a lil something sweet on hand for dessert! (I recommend the Skinny Cows!!)

7. Condiments are a must! Preferably honey mustard, hummus, and guac! (Those are condiments right?)

6. If you cannot cook, the microwave will become your new best friend! I have now named mine Molly Micro- we have great chats each evening around dinner time!

5. Baked lays go with anything!

4. Cereal for dinner is sensational and lower calorie than most dinners! For a fancy cereal treat- go ahead, get crazy, and combine 2 or 3 kinds!

3. It is possible to create a sandwich pretty close to what you like at your fave place! (Now all I need is one of those grills from PD's and I am set!)

2. Unfortunately, frozen dinners never taste as good as the picture on the box tells you it will. But you get over that pretty fast!

1. Eating at home causes you to spend less cash money and consume less calories! Um, yes please!

So there you have it!

Alright, off to heat up my baked ziti in a box...

... and then finish up my list of restaurants I can't wait to eat at on my visit home to Dallas in October!

Ok, so maybe I haven't totally mastered it :)

Bon Appetit!!

It's Back...Dear Diary

It's ironic, I figured I would have a lot more blogging material when I moved up here to St. Louis but for some reason, it seems to be incredibly lacking! Not sure what that says about me, but we'll leave that for another time and place.

I woke up super early this morning, and as I was laying in bed was thinking about what I would post next on the blog! Obviously, because isn't that what everyone thinks about when they mysteriously wake up early on a Sunday morning?! But anyways, I was deep in thought and then it hit me.... the diary! Somehow it got lost in the midst of quitting my job, moving, and starting school. But as of today, she is back!

**For those of you who are new readers of the blog, I will, on occasion, post legit diary entries from my middle school and unfortunately, sometimes high school diary! It is merely for humors sake, to remind my friend Karen how far our friendship has come, and to keep me humble!

We left off during 8th grade. I was currently in madly in love with Craig and Clay and was super excited when they would call me a brain or make eye contact with me in the hall. I was furious at Karen for a while (probably because Clay made eye contact with her more than me... we kept a tally...yes, we were sooo cool!) , but we made up. And I was struggling through the beginnings of reformed theology and also struggling to land my tumbling passes at the gym! Yes, the diary covers all this. Pretty deep.... Right!!

We pick up today in my last week of 8th grade. May 27th to be exact.

Dear Diary,

Wuz ^? NMH! I am a studyhollic. I have been studying since 6:00. It's now 10:20. Talk about boring! Today was great!

I talked to Clay (yeah!) but something better happened. I was totally flirting with Grant all day. Ok, it all started at lunch! Ash + I were walking into the cafeteria and he goes, "hey cuties!" AHH!

Then, he stole this note out of my pocket. I just let him take it, I didn't care! Later, I was like "Hey, Grant, can I have my note back!" He told me where it was and I went and got it. When I got it, he goes "Hey, babe, did you get it?" Then he hit me in the stomach. He got this look on his face then goes, "Woa, your stomach is hard!" AHHH!

I heart him and Clay and Alex, but he (Grant) is going out with Leigh. Next year they probably won't go out cuz Leigh is leaving! Maybe we'll go out! Gotta study!

Luv ya- Caroline

Ok, so if that is not a great day and a clear sign that a boy is totally in love with you, I'm not sure what is! Even though he did have a girlfriend! (This diary has made me wonder if I might have been somewhat delusional!)

Think I might try to the whole note in the pocket thing up here at seminary and see how it goes! Although, I better not let the next boy punch me in the stomach! Pretty sure I wouldn't get the same reaction these days!

Well, gotta go! Until next time...

Eat More Chikin

Seriously, there is no greater place than Chik Fil A! (Ok, well maybe there is but for a poor seminary student who LOVES to eat out but has no money...there really is no greater place than Chik Fil A!)

I have always loved this beloved Chicken Establishment! I first loved it for it's oh so creative marketing schemes. All those cows with signs and banners saying "Eat More Chikin!" Those billboards never ceased to make me laugh as I made my commute to high school each morning!

I then loved Chik Fil A for its great food- those little nuggets, sensational waffle fries, and practically drinkable honey mustard! And then those lil chicken mini biscuits! As one of my friends described them today- God's gift to breakfast!! (I'm not sure the chickens would agree, but...

But I now love Chik Fil A for a new reason- FREE FOOD! (Those are some of the most beautiful words to me now! And sadly, I am not kidding!) But listen to how great this is. Our local Chik Fil A offers a free entree each and every monday if you bring your church bulletin with you! You simply turn in your bulletin and they in return hand the delicious chicken item of your choice!

I'm not sure if this is a STL thing or if it exists nation wide, but check into it at the Chik Fil A near you. I never heard about it in Dallas. I'm guessing because if they offered this deal in the Bible Belt they just might run out of chicken, out of money, and thus out of business... and those sweet advertising cows would end up on countless hamburgers instead of on roadside billboards across the nation!

Ok, I am off to do what I have procrastinated from all day... studying! Seriously, does it ever end? Don't answer that please! I don't want to know!

I will leave my closing remarks to some dear friends...

Going to Chapel

**Note, for those not reading too carefully, the title does not read "Going to THE Chapel." So for any of you who had gotten excited that I had gotten engaged within one month of being up here... I am so sorry to disappoint you! Check again in another month!

Haha..Right!

Anyways, the real title of intention of this post was to tell you about what has been one of the sweetest parts of my experience up here at Covenant so far... Going to Chapel.

Each Tuesday and Friday, the students, staff, faculty and families of Covenant gather together for a truly sweet season of worship- through singing, confession, prayer, and the preached word. Upon getting here, the advice over and over again has been - Go to chapel! Whatever you do, go to chapel! And from two short weeks, I can already see why this has been the overwhelming suggestion of most who have been a part of the community here!

What I have found in chapel is like water to my soul! It has beautiful opportunity for what I learned in class only moments before to descend from my head to my heart and leave my mouth in the form of confession or praise. It has been a place of release, where I can be so honest with the Lord about the gross realities of my life and then receive and be reminded of his grace for it. It has been a place of refuge in the midst of the body and before the Lord when my heart is heavy. It has been a place of rest from the great busyness and stress that already weighs on me. It has been a place of refreshment where I feel like my soul is just filled back up with the glorious truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It has been a place where I feel like I can just get lost- in the most amazing way, where I lose myself for even a few moments and get caught up in the glory of God and the wonder of the gospel!

I am so thankful for the fellowship of the body here, and really so thankful for the church. I often take for granted that the Lord did not call us to himself on an individual basis, but in calling us to himself, called us into a body, a community. That there is never a time as I walk on this earth, that I am in it alone. That I am surrounded by a cloud of witnesses that have gone before me and a community of fellow believers right now.

It is my hope and prayer that as school gets busier that the priority of going to chapel and of worship would not fade in light of the rising pressure of reading, tests, and papers. That the Lord would truly impress upon my heart the need to stop and worship, and that he would remind me of all the blessings I subsequently receive from it. And that I would never take for granted, the deep privilege it is to have this season in my life, where several times a week my day can stop and I can take place in corporate worship, and be caught up in wonder, love and praise!

Have a blessed Sunday!

He's Famous...

A few weeks ago, I posted a little blog about my Grandad who shot his second hole in one! This week he was honored in something far more exciting than my silly little blog- the paper. The Oak Cliff People to be exact! Anyways, here is his article!

It's about time they wrote about you Grandad! Love you!

Church Shopping

I grimace a little bit even as I type out the title to this post because there is something just not right in my mind about the whole concept of "church shopping." It is crazy how much our consumerism has seeped into our Christian culture- into my own heart- that church has become another place where we believe that we are entitled to have it "just the way we like it." I saw that so much in my heart in college, and have seen it resurface some in the past few weeks, and want so desperately to fight against it- that we might once again see the church as a worshipping body of which we are a part- to serve, to love, and to by God's grace, extend his kingdom.

But before I get carried away on a little soap box, my real intention of this post was to let you know that I believe today I found the church that I believe God is calling me to be a part of during my time here in STL, and I couldn't be more excited- South City Church.

I was initially so excited about the looking for a church or "church shopping" process but after only a few short weeks found myself so weary of it. As someone described to me this week, "I needed community like yesterday." Um, totally. And I also really needed a place to serve, to pour my life out "like yesterday" as well. And thus, I didn't want to spend my entire semester visiting all the 25+ PCA churches in STL plus all the other amazing churches up here. But after today, my second time at this church, I don't think I will even visit the remainder of the ones on my narrowed list and I am so thankful.

South City seems to be really be a church that exists in the city for the city- with its aim, by God's grace, to restore and redeem South City-St. Louis with the gospel of Jesus Christ for the glory of God! I am excited about the the community of believers that seem to be there and about all the opportunities to do life and ministry in South City.

* Today, they even announced a new ministry to STL which for those of you who know me will know how much it stirred my heart- a Safe House for victims of Sex Trafficking. (This has been such a deep burden on my heart for a long time and I am so anticipating how the Lord might allow me to get involved in his ministry of compassion to these girls through this church!)

I know there will be much more to say about the church, and what is doing and how God is allowing me to be a part over the next months and years. But I wanted to say thank you to all of you who have prayed for me and counseled me in this area. Please pray that I would truly grow through and give myself to the ministry of this church, and that God would this particular manifestation of his church to radically transform my heart and radically transform this city of which we are a part!

"Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Just Call Me Dr. Doolittle

There are those who say that the entire populous can be divided simply into two kinds of people- dog people and cat people. But whoever those are seemed to have left out the rest of us- those who don't like animals at all.

I am definitely one of the latter. I realize this may come as a surprise to those who don't really know me, that it may offend some of you, may make some of you sad, and possibly, may make some of you stop reading this blog. But it is true, I do not like animals. I have virtually no affection for or affinity towards God's furry or feathery creatures.

I would like to blame this, what might seem to some, as a character flaw on Camp El Har. This day camp forces you to ride horses in a circle around a small arena. It always seemed that the one in front of me always needed to stop for a "restroom break" and I luckily, had a front row seat! Pretty sure I will be happy if I never get on a horse again!

My lack of heart for animals was revealed to me in 6th grade. One of my friends gave me what I am sure she thought was going to be the greatest of gifts- a hamster! Well, at least I hope she thought it was great because after I affectionately named it after my teacher and cleaned out Dori's cage once, I gave her back! Cleaning out a cage full of hamster poop- not my idea of a good time!

The next year, our family got our first and favorite dog! She was a mutt that my mom picked up for free at John's soccer game. Cinnamon was precious, sweet, and docile. Unfortunately, her sweet, docile personality was due to the fact that she was actually very sick. She died a few weeks later. We all hold Cinnamon in high esteem these days; her memory is fond in our minds and in our hearts- probably, sadly, because she was not around long enough for us to get sick of her.

My other experience with dogs is as follows- there was Hamilton, our beagle who chewed through the fence and ran away. Despite an all out search, or a drive to the donut store with their eyes closed, Dad and John never found him. He has, however, provided Dad and I with endless sermon/teaching illustrations about sin, the law, and the life that is found within God's boundaries. In the end, though his barking was more than obnoxious, he was good for something.

Then there was Bo, the black lab that I just HAD to have. Let's just say that after a while, I ceased to give Bo the attention he was due. Yeah, and that might be an understatement! We gave Bo away, those people gave him back. So we gave him away again, and then quickly changed our numbers and moved away. I am kidding- well, sort of.

Then there was Ernie. The dog my friend Mindy's now husband Josh gave her for her birthday! I believe Ernie has a keen sense that I was not his biggest fan, and was determined to win me over. Therefore, he was always jumping up on my bed...when he was wet... with fleas! After he continually barked all night, pooped all over the house, and ran away on more than one occasion, Mindy took him back to the SPCA. I was not opposed. Gosh, am I heartless? Do not answer that!

Along with a lack of affection, I also have a great fear of animals! My lack of heart for them coexists alongside an utter inability to know what to do when they are around. I lack that intuition of what to do and worse what they are able to do with me.

This summer when I was out at the Hawkins ranch for a few days by myself, I was deathly afraid of the cows out in the pasture. They would come up to the fence right around the pool and just stare at me. As I would watch them stealthily approach the fence, a deep fear rose within me. I determined that I absolutely could not make eye contact, in case they saw something in my eyes that would make them want to charge me! I could just picture myself getting attacked by the cow and and left all alone in the wilds of Texas!

Ok, so why am I writing this post today? Because this morning on my walk around the neighborhood, I had a near death run in with some St. Louis wildlife. It appears that up here in Missouri they do not separate the wildlife preserves from the city. Strange. And yet another reason for me to believe that we not only do things bigger, but also better in Texas!

So, this morning I was casually- I mean powerfully- walking along when what do I come across but some deer. It appeared to be a dad, a mom, and a baby- to use technical animal terms. I don't have much experience with deer, but remember from Bambi that deer don't particularly like people. What was I to do? Should I turn back or forge courageously ahead? Filled with courage, I went ahead and I opted again for the no eye contact method. I figured it seemed to work alright with the cows, as well as in elevators and on crowded streets when you don't wan't people to talk to you. So, with great bravery, I proceeded to stare intensely at the sidewalk and stroll on by. It worked and I figured I was in the clear.

That is until my way home. I rounded the last corner only to be met by a sight I had never seen before- a whole pack of what I could only assume to be wild turkeys! I was literally paralyzed with fear, and began having those "when you are awake nightmares" of being viciously attacked by the rather gross birds and being pecked to death. I mean, they probably do have it out for me, I have been eating their friends on my sandwiches pretty much daily for as long as I can remember. I decided to attempt to do that which was anything but natural and stay calm, stare at the sidewalk, and again casually stroll by. Thankfully, it worked. But I did however pick up the speed a bit when I heard a strange sound and swear I saw that gross daddy turkey coming towards me from the corner of my eye.

For those of you who are still reading and those of you who care, I am very thankful that I escaped the ravages of the wilds here in STL and am now sitting comfortably it the animal free student center her at school. What I did not escape however, was the request of one of my new friends to take care of his hamster for 3 days while he and his wife do some work in their house! Looks like I am a people pleaser over and above and animal hater! And I am going to go ahead and say that's a good thing.

Hope y'all have a great day! Stay out of the way of animals, but if you do happen to come across one of those furry and feathery beasts- just keep your eyes on the ground! Works like a charm!

Bad Dreams...

This will be a rather short post, but just wanted to ask for your thoughts, your insights, and for any of you counselors or dream interpreters out there- your professional opinions:

What does it mean when my bad dreams still involve my high school cheerleading days?

This morning, I woke up with my heart still racing from this bad dream, or could we call it a nightmare. I was running around like crazy, emptying every drawer, calling friends for help because I had to cheer at that very moment, and my red bloomers were no where to be found. And there was no way I was going to where the blue ones. They weren't what the rest of the squad was wearing and so didn't go with the white uniform.

Oh, and to make things worse, tryouts were the next day and my hurkies totally stunk!

Clearly a nightmare...

Unfortunately, a nightmare applying to events from 10 years ago!

So yeah, I'm pretty sure I need some help!

The First Day of School...

Well friends, it finally got here. And when I say 'finally', I do mean finally- the first day of school.

Walking onto campus this morning felt like a complete out of body experience. As I got out of the car and walked to class I couldn't help but think of a friend of mine who posted sweet pictures of her children going back to school yesterday on her blog. The specific photo I had in mind was the one of her son crying in his dad's arms, a little bit anxious about the day ahead. I just kept thinking to myself "my sentiments exactly", and wishing my dad was here to drop me off at class.

* Note: this would not be the first time my dad was with me at my first day of grad school. Last year, I was taking a few classes in Dallas. On my first day of Greek, who I am greeted by when I walk out of class? My dad! He was just coming up to "look around the bookstore"- oh yeah, the one we didn't have:) Haha. I love you, Dad. We have a bookstore here, so feel free to come on up and check it out anytime!

Ok, so back to school. First class today: Sermon Preparation and Delivery. Now you might be wondering why I am in this class. My admissions counselor and the class TA assured me that this was the class for me. But as I walked in this morning to a room full of at least 60 men, I wondered the exact same thing. And I am pretty sure they did too.

It brought me back to my college days, where on the first day of class, as I walked in and sat down, I had this strange sense that I didn't quite belong there. This strange sense was confirmed when the teacher walked in, started speaking in Russian, and oddly enough, the whole class actually understood the strange sounds that were coming out of her mouth. That day I politely excused myself and proceeded to find my actual class that was right across the hall- in English!

But today, this was my correct class, so I was sitting there rather awkwardly and super intimidated. (I am sure you who know me can get a pretty good picture of what this looked like!) That is until, the one and only other girl, walked in right as class was starting. I think you could see the relief just sweet across my face! I introduced myself to her and only her (don't want to be THAT girl) after class. And now am feeling great about the class. I am pretty sure when its over I will be ready for my ordination in the PCA..

Haha. Right. For any of you who are freaking out, please sense the sarcasm:)

Overall the rest of the day went great. Spent some time studying in the student center. And by studying I really mean surfing the internet, drinking diet coke, and making new friends. Who really studies on the first day anyways?

I am really excited about my classes tomorrow, and am excited about the canoe trip I am going on on Saturday. Umm, could be a little scary. I am not the best at canoeing. And when I say 'not the best' I mean not good at all. Hopefully, I will arrive back home safe and sound and be here on the blog Sunday to give you a full report.

Thanks for all your prayers, calls, texts, etc. today. They were much appreciated. I sure have great friends! Have a great weekend!

On Boasting...

I will not boast in anything, no gifts no power no wisdom,
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer,
But this I know with all my heart, his wounds have paid my ransom.

I have sung these words, to this, one of my very favorite hymns, many times and in many different contexts. But on Friday, as I sung them in our new student convocation here at the seminary, these familiar words fell upon my heart in a brand new way.

The reality is that most of the time, I cannot say, I cannot sing these first two lines truthfully. Because the greater reality is that I actually do boast, find so much pride in so many other things- futile things, insignificant things, honestly, ridiculous things to boast in, but things I boast in nonetheless.

I have seen this so so much in myself even in my time here so far. I have found myself over and over again boasting in where I am from, my experiences, my gifts, the job I used to possess, the church I used to attend, the people I used to work with or for, good things like my friends and family, and really shallow things that I am not totally willing at this point to expose to an internet full of random strangers:)

This boasting is sometimes in the words I say, is most often present in the thoughts I think, and is deeply rooted in my heart- flowing out into my life in ways I see and ways I am sure I don't.

As I stood and sang those words on Friday night, I was overwhelmed by the thought, the imperative that this, these words, must become my prayer. And so it is that as I start school tomorrow and fully embark on this new season of my life that I make this my prayer- that the Lord by his tender graces and often severe mercy would humble me in such a way that I truly will not boast in anything- no gifts, no power, no wisdom, but I will boast in Jesus Christ his death and resurrection.

A dear friend sent me this quote on humility from John Piper the other day which really struck me, "Humility is the one grace in all our graces, that if we gaze upon it, becomes something else. It flourishes when the gaze is elsewhere- on the greatness of the grace of God in Christ."

If you are one of those who prays for me, would you please pray that I would truly fix my eyes, fix my gaze on Jesus Christ, that all my other pride and other boasting would be swallowed up by the overwhelming reality of the grace of God in Christ towards one such as me, and that my heart would be changed to boast in Christ and in Christ alone!

To Him be the Glory!

Cheers to You...Happy Birthday, Linds!

Today is a very big day for my sister, Lindsay! First of all, it is her 21st Birthday!!! In addition, it is also her first day of her senior year of college, the day she auditions for all her fall shows, and perhaps, most exciting- the day she gets a blog post on Simply Full dedicated completely to her:)

Ok, so maybe that is not the most exciting of all these things, but regardless- Lindsay- this blog post is to you!

HAPPY, HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY!

Lindsay, you are not only my sister but truly my dearest and favorite friend! And though you are my "little" sister, I look up to you and admire you in so many ways!

I admire the way you have the courage to pursue your dreams.
I admire how hard you work at everything in your life!
I admire the way you sing and soo wish I could do it!
I admire your confidence in who you are in Christ and in exactly who he has made you to be.
I admire your humility that is mixed with this confidence. It is real humility, and such a reflection of Jesus!
I admire your integrity in everything!
I admire the way that you love people- faithfully, authentically, and without question! One of my favorite things is to see how all the different people in your life just adore you for you who are- because you have loved them, without question, for exactly who they are!
You teach me so much, my sweet sister, and I just love you!

For all of Lindsay's auditions over the past few years, I have been known to write her a cheer! It is pretty much all I can contribute due to my lack of talent and how stinkin nervous I get at those auditions! Linds, I seriously don't know how you do it all the time! But here you, a birthday and audition cheer all in one!

Ready...Hit it...

Happy Birthday, Linds! You are 21!
I hope your day is so much fun!

Finally, old enough to drink a beer!
And so here you go, your birthday cheer!

Enjoy your day, have fun at class!
And tonight at auditions, go kick some...tail!

The greatest actress in all the school!
You are sure to make those directors drool!

From your songs and from those parts you read!
They will just be dying to make you the lead!

But as you sing, and dance, and read your lines!
Don't forget who is cheering for you- your biggest fan, your favorite sister- Caroline!

Have a great day, Linds! I LOVE YOU!

Random Ramblings from STL...

Well friends, I have had a request to update the blog. And by "a" request, I do mean one. So Lindsay, this post is for you. Seriously, no rhyme or reason to this post here. Literally, just random ramblings from STL. For those of you who are not interested in this post, stay tuned for Monday's, it is going to be really special.

**Yes, I do sometimes plan out my blog posts days in advance. This may not be very bloggerish of me. But its my blog, I can do what I want:)

Ok, so anyways, back to the Random Ramblings from STL...

Random Rambling #1...On driving.
Learning my way around a new city = wasting a lot of gas. Tonight, I figured I would take "short cut" on my commute home from the seminary. My commute as of now is 6 whole minutes. Tonight I took a different turn out of the parking lot...25 minutes later, after a few REALLY dark streets, clearly a couple of wrong turns, and even a few episodes of backing up at an intersection I arrived home safe and sound. Definitely the route from here on out!

In addition, last week I printed out two pictures at Walmart to finish off the frames in my room. Total price of pictures- 47 cents! Well, it ends up that the Walmart I printed them off at was probably a good 20 miles away. Total spent on gas getting to and from Walmart- definitely more than 47 cents!

Random Rambling #2... On things I miss from Texas (besides people obviously).
Texas U-Turns. Never really knew how great they were until you didn't have them. Texas High School Football...ok really just the cheerleaders and the Belles from the games! But whatever, I miss it. Go Scots! Mexican Food. Not cool when Chipotle is now my idea of eating some good Tex-Mex. If you are tired of me blogging about Mexican food, there is any easy way to fix that...SEND ME SOME! Would MiCocina keep in the mail?

Random Rambling #3...On things I don't miss from Texas
... the 100 degree heat! It has been in the 70's here the past few days! What what! Can't remember the last time I wore a light jacket or wanted to sit outside on an August afternoon!

Random Rambling #4...On Sorority Rush...
I am still SOO into it. I tend to make fun of those women who are still into it so far out of college. Kinda scared I am going to be one seeing as I have been shamelessly stalking all my girls on facebook trying to see what they are pledging! To all my little Aggie girls, I have a subtle message for you...THINK THETA!

Random Rambling #5... On making friends.
Guess what! I finally made some!

Legit text sent to mom and dad last night after our new students welcome reception: "I made some friends!"

Legit response from mom "Wow! I am so excited for you! Call me later."

Don't worry I am really cool!!:)

I guess that is it for the random ramblings. Stay tuned for Monday's post, sure to be better than this one!

And since I can't have Tex-Mex food, I will leave you with a Tex-Mex farewell...

ADIOS AMIGOS!!!

The Mercy of God...

Hey friends! I read this last night in my Spurgeon's Morning and Evening. It truly was like water to my soul as I "meditated a little on the mercy of the Lord." Hopefully, it will be of great encouragement to you as well.

Meditate a little on this mercy of the Lord. It is a tender mercy. With gentle, loving touch, He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. He is as gracious in the manner of His mercy as in the matter of it.

It is great mercy. There is nothing little in God; His mercy is like himself- it is infinite. You cannot measure it. His mercy is so great that it forgives great sins to great sinners, after great lengths of time, and then gives great favours and great privileges, and raises us up to great enjoyments in the great heaven of the great God.

It is undeserved mercy, as indeed all true mercy must be, for deserved mercy is only a misnomer for justice. There was no right on the sinner's part to the kind consideration of the Most High; has the rebel been doomed at once to eternal fire he would have richly merited the doom, and if delivered from wrath, sovereign love alone has found a cause for their was none in the sinner himself.

It is rich mercy. Some things are great but have little efficacy in them, but this mercy is cordial to your drooping spirits; a golden ointment to your bleeding wounds; a heavenly bandage to your broken bones; a royal chariot for your weary feet; a bosom of love for your trembling heart.

It is manifold mercy. As Bunyan says, 'All the flowers in God's garden are double'. There is no single mercy. You may think you have but one mercy, but you shall find it to be a whole cluster of mercies.

It is abounding mercy. Millions have received it, yet far from its being exhausted, it is as fresh, as full, and as free as ever.

It is unfailing mercy. It will never leave thee. If mercy be thy friend, mercy will be with thee in temptation to keep thee from yielding; with thee in trouble to prevent thee from sinking; with thee living to be the light and life of thy countenance; and with thee dying to be the joy of thy soul when earthly comfort is ebbing fast.

Maybe on the Next Aisle...

Well, this title doubly describes my experience shopping at Schnucks this afternoon. Schnucks is the local grocer up here in St. Louis and I am pretty sure I will be a faithful shopper at Schnucks merely because of the name. Seriously, not much cooler than a store named Schnucks. Ok, maybe there is. But I just like saying it. Gives me a good laugh every time. Schnucks! Schnucks! Schnucks! :) Love it!

Also, for a good laugh there is a place nearby called Straubs. Not sure what they sell there, but whatever it is, I am going! Seriously, I am just getting in a good chuckle every time I drive down the street. But all this talk about Schnucks and Straubs, no matter how fun it is, is besides the point!

My experience shopping at Schnucks made me just a little bit sad and a little bit homesick. For probably a couple of reasons...

1. The fact that I was grocery shopping in general, and not going to dinner at MiCocina. I just love eating out and am maybe a little depressed that I no longer have the money to do so. Honestly though, there really aren't any great restaurants around here anyways- how could there be with no Mexican food. Who knows maybe I'll actually enjoy grocery shopping then. Dallas peeps, enjoy, we know food down there!

2. The fact that some of the few grocery items I do enjoy, I could not find on the shelves of Schnucks...like Honey Wheat Pretzels, good flat bread, my weight watchers yogurts, and duh... Blue Bell Ice Cream.

3. The fact that in my one hour- that's right, one hour of grocery shopping, I did not run into a single person that I knew! I found myself just hoping- maybe on the next aisle! Now, I realize that this is highly unlikely seeing as I know like 4 people in STL and they probably go to a different Schnucks! But regardless, I would get kind of excited every time I rounded my way to the next aisle, only to be faced with a bunch of random strangers.

I think that is one of the things I am going to miss the most- always having to allow for a few extra minutes for each of your errands because you are sure going to run into someone that you know. When a trip to the grocery store for me always inevitably included a few little chats with my girls, their parents, my friends!

Community is special and it is sweet. And it is such a joy and privilege to just do life with people. Today, I am missing that community I have at home- the faces I'd run into at the store, at the Y, and at JD's while I was getting my diet coke, the people that would honk and stop while I was on a walk.

But I am also hopeful and anxiously looking forward to the community that God will provide for me here- a people, friends, to live with and do life with, to know and be known by, to love and be loved by, a people with whom to share life, share joys, share burdens, share laughs. It's neat to think about the reality that some of the strangers I saw today- at lunch, at the coffee shop, at the store- may just become friends with whom I share my life and my heart!

What a day it will be when I have friends at Schnucks!! :) Can't wait!

For now, to my community, my friends, my fam, my girls in Dallas...I love and miss you! I'm so abundantly thankful for the community I have had and will always have with you!

Howdy from St. Louis...

Friends, family, and internet blogging pals...

"Greetings" from St. Louis, MO- also known as the Gateway to the West. Not sure what all that means, but I will get on my STL history and let you know ASAP!

I apologize for the delay in the blogging update, and promise to be better in the days ahead. Much has happened over the past few days. And since a picture is worth a thousand words, I give you many pictures and just a few words...

Karen, Me, Mindy, and Lucy getting ready to head off to STL. These three of my very best friends graciously offered to help me drive my car up to St. Louis...oh, and my Uhaul full of stuff. They could probably think of another word for it. I will just call it stuff- important stuff.

We tried to document each of us driving the U-Haul. Here are Lucy and I at stop #2! We were all pretty proud of our U-Haul driving. I think I may just be ready for my job at UPS!!

Our first St. Louis adventure... the Cardinals game! Nothing like a hot dog, a margarita, and Albert Pujols hitting a home run to welcome us to STL. We had a great time!

This is the City Museum. The weirdest, but maybe the most fun place in STL. It is like a massive McDonald's play place... but much better, and still super fun for those of us who are now over 36" tall. We had a blast! Come visit and I will take you there!

There are caves in this museum. Here I am venturing into a dark hole, an unknown abyss all alone. Hopefully this is not metaphoric of my move to STL!

Just call us Jonah! Hanging out in the mouth of a fish!

Here Lucy is coming out of a hole of rubber gloves! Nasty...yes! But a great pic!

Loved this pic of Karen in the mirrors!

Blueberry Hill... one of the most famous restaurants in all of St. Louis. There is a wall of pictures of the famous people who have eaten there! Next to go on the wall... Karen, Lucy, Mindy, and Caroline. Be sure to look for us when you go!

I have moved in with a great family here in STL who have graciously allowed me to live in their basement while I get my feet on the ground. This is my super cute room. I put it together all by myself!

Haha! Right! I NEVER hung even a thing on the walls my last 2 years at the Hawkins. Chalk this one up to my wedding planner best friends and my pal, Lucy! They did an amazing job. And my cute little room really feels like home!

Little desk area! They managed to use every decorative thing I had in one room...every picture, every cross. They even let me put all my books on the bookshelves! Thanks girls! Ya'll are the greatest!

Overall, things have been pretty good. Other than my mini breakdown the first night I was here, I have felt really at peace. (I woke up at 4 am wanting to go home!) I was so thankful for my friends being here and helping get adjusted. And now, I am even thankful for the Greek test I have to take on Thursday because it gives me something to do to fill my days!

Best part of today....I found a coffee shop to study at with free Wi-Fi and unlimited refills of Diet Coke. If this is any indication of what STL is like, I am pretty sure I am going to like it here.

Worst part of today...watching Nastia and the other American Gymnasts perform in Dallas from my bedroom in St. Louis. But whatever, I'm over it!

Right...

Seriously, thank you for your love, support, texts, calls, emails, and prayers! They have been so appreciated and the prayers so felt. I am missing all my sweet friends and fam in Dallas! But so looking forward to what's ahead!

I'll keep you posted. So be sure to tune in to the blog every once in a while!

It has been so rich...

That's how I would describe my last week here in Dallas. I have felt totally full and so satisfied for the past week. On occasion I have maybe even felt a little sick, but that's because I have effectively eaten my way through these past few days.

I made a list of restaurants I wanted to eat at before I left, and sure enough have checked them all off. But... Eating at all my favorite places in one week= eating a whole lot of things that aren't that good for me. And thus, I haven't felt all that well. :)

The richness I am feeling tonight however has little to do with the meals I have eaten, but rather so much more to do with the people with whom I have shared them. It is the richness of these deep friendships that make me feel so full tonight.

It is also however the richness of these friendships that has left me crying in my empty room much of the day today. Someone once told me that tears were the sign of a full heart, and today, more than ever I believe that to be true! My heart is full of thankfulness and joy and love as I reflect on how gracious and good the Lord has been to me in all the many relationships in my life and especially in these past 5+ years. But my heart also breaks as I think about leaving all of this, all of these people that I love so much, as I leave for St. Louis early Tuesday morning!

From my precious high school and college girls, to my incredible girl friends here in Dallas, to my amazing friends from work, to my PCPC family, to wonderful family with whom I have lived, to the incredible women who have poured their life into me, to my awesome extended family, and to my precious parents and brother and sister...the Lord has blessed me over and abundantly, so far beyond what I deserve, so far beyond all I could ask or imagine. And tonight, as I think about each of the people with whom I have shared my life I just couldn't be more thankful.

For all of you that have been a part of my life here these past few years- you have truly filled my cup, made my life so full of joy, so rich, so sweet. I love you dearly!

They say home is where the heart is. So...Dallas, Texas you are home! For as I drive away, so much of my heart stays here- a heart that's full, a heart that's thankful, a heart that's been blessed by the richness that has come from all my friendships with all of you! I LOVE YOU!!

Hole-In-One...AGAIN!!!

I just wanted to give a HUGE shout out to my Grandad, the golfing-extraordinaire, who made a Hole-In-One today!

Oh, and for the second time this year!

Grandad is 84 years old has been playing this very course for 70 years! A few months ago, he got his very first hole in one! He actually was sort of confused when he got to the green and couldn't find his ball. His friend was looking around for it, and all of a sudden exclaimed, "Buddy, it's in the hole!!"

Today, while Grandad was on that same course, on the exact same hole in fact, he again hit the ball with perfection. But this he time got to bask in all his glory because he actually saw it go in!

When we called to congratulate him today, Lindsay and I asked if we could please speak with the golf pro. He proudly answered, "You've got him!"

Congratulations Grandad! I love you and am so proud of you!

And thanks for proving that golfing skills like many things just get better with age. You've given me hope! Maybe in 60 years I will actually be able to make contact with the ball!!

Guess What!!!...

I met NASTIA today!!!

It was just awesome! A few days ago I received a text message from my friend Ruth which read, "Do you want to go meet Nastia on Saturday?"

Um, obviously!!

As you all know I am obsessed with gymnastics and have been dying to run into Nastia Liukin before I left for STL. It has been one of my 2 goals- the other meeting President Bush. So, let's just say, no matter what I had to do today I was not going to miss out on this opportunity.

Today Nastia was signing autographs at an AT&T store close by. So I gathered up my things to have her autograph. Luckily, in all my cleaning out I could not bring my self to part with the newspaper articles from the Olympics and the US Weekly with her picture on the front.

So yeah, I gathered up all my gear and about noon picked up Ruth and we headed up to AT&T. There was soo much excitement in the car. You have no idea.

We pulled up, got in the line, and waited anxiously to meet the Olympic Champion.
There were a bunch of other folks there as well. Ironically, not as many little aspiring Olympic Champions as we had expected!! Creepily, there were quite a few men older than me there by themselves. (I personally don't think they should have been allowed inside!) These fans, however were our favorties!
Here is Nastia signing autographs!!

Ruth with her pal...

My autographed paper and picture! Pretty sure these will look great on the walls of my room in STL...right next to my posters of Celine and Clay Aiken!
Needless to say, this has been an incredible day! I am just ecstatic that I got to meet Nastia. And it pretty much makes up for the fact that I can't to go the National Championships next week!

To all you bloggers out there, let me offer you a bit of encouragement... Dreams really do come true!!

Just Kidding!

Well, not really!!!

Happy Saturday!!

how do you prepare?

As my move date gets closer and closer, one question becomes increasingly ever present in my mind and on my heart- how do I really prepare to move?

I mean, I know how to prepare for some things- like the Greek placement test that I unfortunately have to take. I just cram for hours every day like I have done today. Seriously? I thought Greek was over.

I know how to prepare physically- I just clean and pack. (Although it is a good thing few of you see my room or you might question whether I actually know how to do this or not.)

But the reality is, I don't know how to prepare emotionally and relationally for such a transition. Honestly, I have never really done it. I went to college with 20 friends from high school, and it was what everyone in my world was doing at the time. Now it is just me. Most everyone I know (except my sweet college girls) is staying here. It's just me that is moving on. How am I supposed to prepare for this? How am I supposed to handle these next few weeks?

How to I prepare my heart to be somewhere else and yet still be fully here? How do I spend my time with the people I will see in these next two weeks? How do I say goodbye to people who are in my everyday life, who have been my life,- my closest friends, my closest girls, my church, my family (I don't even want to go there).

The reality is that right now, I feel like I am in such a weird place- excited to go, really sad to leave, unsure of what the future looks like, unsure of what these next days will and should look like. I want to be intentional. I want to use my time, my conversations in the very best, most beneficial, most life giving (both to me and to others) way possible. But I honestly don't know how.

I would so covet your prayers- for the Lord to really guard and guide my heart in this transition. That he will show me what to do and how to live in these next few days, especially how to be with those I know and love the most. And I would covet any thoughts, any advice you may have.

What has been of great comfort to me in all of this has been the glorious reality that although this is maybe the biggest change of my life- my God who is bigger, above it, and in the midst of it- doesn't, will not, actually cannot change. He is the same- yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is ever present in every way both in Dallas and in St. Louis. His covenant promises to me have been sealed up in Christ, and I know, I can trust, and rest in the reality that he will be my God, I will be his, and he will be with me- today, and tomorrow, and in all the days to come.

Hallelujah!!

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with thee
Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!
